    Professional Profile

    Dr. Castillo joined the College of Education and Social Sciences in the spring of 2007. She received a B.A. in psychology in 1997, a M.A. in clinical psychology in 1999, a M.S. in counseling in 2001, and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi in 2008.

    Dr. Castillo is the Chair of the Professional Counseling Track (LPC) within the Counselor Education Program and was named the first Helen Piehl Professor of Education from 2009-2012.

    Teaching and Related Service

    Dr. Castillo is an associate professor who teaches courses within the Department of Education’s Counselor Education Program and the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Social Work’s Psychology Program.  In addition, she supports the Department of Education core graduate curriculum by teaching Human Development.

    Castillo serves as the adviser to the MA program in professional counseling. Dr. Castillo has developed and taught courses such as Theories of Counseling, Group Counseling, Career Counseling, Cross-cultural Counseling, Techniques of Counseling, Human Development, Theory and Practice of Counselor Supervision, Psychopharmacology for Counselors, Practicum in Counseling and Internship in Counseling.

    Dr. Castillo is the author of international, national, regional and local presentations and has co-authored several publications with colleagues in her field. She has also served as a keynote speaker to local organizations committed to the attainment of professional development and equal opportunities to education.

    She is a member of the American Counseling Association, Texas Counseling Association, National Career Development Association, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, American School Counseling Association and the Southwestern Psychological Association. She also belongs to Counselors for Social Justice, Amarillo Association of Mental Health Professionals and to the High Plains Counseling Association.

    Dr. Castillo currently serves as an advisor for the local chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education. Dr. Castillo was a previous advisor to Kappa Delta Chi, a Latina honor society on the WTAMU campus as well as the Plains regional representative to TACHE, the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education.

    Research and Creative Activity

    Dr. Castillo's research interests illustrate the social and emotional experiences of females diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, the development of multicultural competencies in counseling students, the adjustment of post military individual and family trauma, and the effects of the digital revolution upon interpersonal relationships.

    Personal Sketch

    Dr. Castillo lives in Amarillo with her husband Rick Martinez, their Boston Terrier Paisley, and their three cats: Ivy Noir, CasPurr Bordeaux, and Biggie Smalls.  She and her family moved to the Texas panhandle from Corpus Christi, Texas. Dr. Castillo enjoys reading, attending performance arts events, and traveling with friends and family.
